Hi Ben
I thought you may be interested in the two snips below, they are from a
similar thread that is being discussed on another forum I am on. The first
snip being from a post by a guy (Frank Greco) who works at the New York
Conservation Aquarium and the second by a UK hobbyist with quite a lot of
experience.
1.
At work, I feed every day, twice a day. I feed a variety of foods including
capelin (vitaminzed), frozen mysis/krill, freeze-dried krill (vitaminized),
live Artemia nauplii (enriched), gelatin diet, flake food (Omega One brand),
food sticks (Tetra Cichlid), TetraMarin, kale and/or collard greens. I also
use clam when it's available to me. This is a fairly new feeding regime at
work. Since I have some help, I'm able to feed the fish more often.
At home, my fish get fed 3-4 times/day, as much as they will eat in 60
seconds or so. The three anemones I have get fed daily. More or less the
same foods as above, as I just bring some home with me.
Wenda, I totally agree with you. Folks are so involved with monitoring water
quality that they forget about the animals. High nitrate or phosphate can be
corrected. A dead animal can't (unless some of you have powers I don't know
about!).
2.
I can tell you what I use but would not like to say that I recommend
anything. I can only say what works for me.
King British Marine Food
Hikari Tropical marine pellets
Hikari Tropical micro pellets
Hikari Tropical algae wafers
Hikari Tropical sinking wafers
Ocean Nutrition Reef flakes
Ocean Nutrition Brine Shrimps flakes
Ocean Nutrition Algae flakes
Marine A Sinking Morsels
Nori.
Various frozen foods, brine shrimp, mysis, krill, cockles, mussels
Fresh brine shrimp, naupli and daphnia.
I feed small amounts two or three times a day and I try to feed something
different every day. I do not turn off the pumps or the skimmer. I think it
does the inhabitants good to chase the food.
My shrimps I tend to hand feed, also some of the crabs and the sun corals
and the bubble corals.
I have found that the fish love the dried food, some seem to prefer it to
live. The dried food is also eaten by the fan worms, sea pens, bubble coral,
the barnacle, scallops, yellow polyps and gorgonians.
I believe that if we feed a wide variety of food, hopefully we can provide a
more balanced diet. I also agree with Frank that some of the prepared foods
re probably of higher nutritional value than the live food.

Subject: flake foods
I was wondering what other people on the list feed their fish. I am coming
to the end of my flake food and need to buy some more. I have been using
O.S.I. spirulina flakes and marine flakes. I also feed seaweed selects a
few times a week and brine shrimp once in a while (every couple of weeks I
remember to pick some up and actually feed it to my fish, most of the time I
buy a bag and forget it in the back of my car for a few days before I
remember.) Sometimes I will defrost some shredded clam and put it in about
5 minute before the lights go out. I am feeding 3 yellow tangs, 4 green
chromis, a dragon gobi, a watchman gobi, a clown, a cleaner wrasse, 4
cleaner shrimp, a sally lightfoot crab, and about 50 or so hermits.
thanks
Ben
