Craig, puttin a UV on a reef tank is a real (amateur) mistake. Your plankton
levels will never come up to par, especially phytoplankton, and too many good
things will be killed with the bad.
Your algae problems will go away on their own (albeit slowly) when you
switch to a QUALITY RO/DI system. Cut back on feedings to a few times a week,
and if you're feeding frozen brine, throw it in the trash can. FROZEN BRINE
SUCKS ! there, I said it. It only gives you 7 or 8 % total protein, and all
the other junk just fouls the water...a fish that eats three feedings a day
of this stuff, can STILL STARVE TO DEATH.
Find out where the nutrients are coming from (substrates, salt, food, etc)
that are feeding the algae. While a UV sterilizer will certainly kill the
algae spores, it doesn't FIX the problem.
The reasons I use SpectraPure water filtration in my store are these:
They use the best prefilters, carbon, and RO membranes, 1/2 micron compared
to others 5 micron. Also, the quality in craftmanship is there, pressure
gauges and purity monitors are standard on their high-end units. The quality
of these units starts where others end. The DI cartridges are great, and
product tech support is there too.
UV's have their place, but it's not on a reef tank.
 Good luck,
                   Tom
