I took two pieces of wood and bolted the sids of the hoods to it. I then
suspended them from the ceiling. I can see it appears much brighter and I
did lower them down to about 5 inches.

Are the lights in a hood? How did you suspend them? You will have a bit of
light escape from the hood, but you should be okay with that. I think the
amount of light lost from suspending them is well worth getting the glass
out from under them. You loose about 15-20% of your light with a clean piece
of glass. That amount goes up rapidly as the glass becomes covered with salt
spray etc...

Ever since I set up my 125 my lights have always sat directly on top
of the
tank. I used a glass canopy to protect the lights from making
contact with
the water. After seeing and reading about suspending the lights I
decided to
suspend the lights today. I removed the glass and suspended the
lights about
seven inches from the water surface. The tank now seems brighter.
The light
now floods the whole tank all the way to the top and even along the
back
wall. The lights I am using are PC lights with a total of 330 watts.

watts being 7100k and 220 being 9325k. I didn't use a 20 watt NO
light strip
that used to sit in the back of the tank, but I don't think it made
much of
a difference.
Knowing that what light humans see and what corals actually use did
I do a
good thing? Glass absorbs some of the light right? And what about
the light
that now floods the room that the tank is in....is that a waste or
was it
also being wasted before by just going through the walls of the
tank?
