Greetings, Joe. I run a refugium on one of my display tanks. It is on the
same lighting schedule as the tank. Some people advocate reverse lighting on
the refugium to reduce pH swings but IME the difference is not worth the
trouble. I do not believe macroalgae in the wild gets 24 hours of light each
day. Periods of darkness are just as important as periods of light. Mangrove
may be an exception, however. Please do whatever works for you. I have good
macroalgae growth with reduction of phosphate and nitrate to near zero.
Snails and amphipods thrive in the refugium free of preditors. It has a few
different macroalgaes and an oolitic sand bed of 5-6 inches. Many bristle
worms, etc. It has 3 watts per gallon standard daylight NO for 13 hours a
day. Flow is 3-4 times volume per hour.
