Greetings, Joe. I run a refugium on one of my display tanks. It is on the 
same lighting schedule as the tank. Some people advocate reverse lighting on 
the refugium to reduce pH swings but IME the difference is not worth the 
trouble. I do not believe macroalgae in the wild gets 24 hours of light each 
day. Periods of darkness are just as important as periods of light. Mangrove 
may be an exception, however. Please do whatever works for you. I have good 
macroalgae growth with reduction of phosphate and nitrate to near zero. 
Snails and amphipods thrive in the refugium free of preditors. It has a few 
different macroalgaes and an oolitic sand bed of 5-6 inches. Many bristle 
worms, etc. It has 3 watts per gallon standard daylight NO for 13 hours a 
day. Flow is 3-4 times volume per hour.
