Dear all
I have a 160 gal fish/reef tank that is only lightly stocked with a few LPS
and soft corals. The calcium level currently drops by around 20ppm per week
(if left unmaintained) and I have about one gallon per day evaporation. I
currently use kent calcium chloride to maintain a level about 400ppm.
However I want to start using Kalkwasser to maintain calcium levels (I don't
want a calcium reactor at this early stage).
I've calculated that kalkwasser should be ideal as 1 gallon of saturated
calcium hyroxide solution is equivalent of about 4g calcium (based on
solubility of 0.17g per 100ml). 4g calcium should potentially raise calcium
level in tank by 6ppm per day based on tank volume of 735 litres.
As a method of addition I'm considering using a large (3 - 5 litre
container), sealed and filled with saturated kalkwasser. This would contain
a magnetic stirrer to slowly agitate the mixture over time. R.O water would
be pumped into the bottom of the container by a peristaltic pump from a
separate holding tank. Oerflowing kalkwasser would drip out of the top of
the container via a tube and into my sump. A pump flow rate of around 3ml
per minute should do it.
Do these figures and method seem reasonable based on peoples experience
using kalkwasser ?
I obviously need to get hold of a peristaltic pump - the LFS has not been of
any help. I'm based in the UK - what pumps do people on this list
use....where can you get them......and what is their cost ?.
Many thanks in advance.
Gavin
