First....find out what the weather is going to be like....if its in the 80s
region moving stuff is a lot easier.
Secondly, go visit your LFS, as for as many cardboard boxes with styrofoam
inserts as they have, get yourself some big bags. get some containers for
water.
Make up about 100gals salt water, unless you already have a tank set up of
that volume.
Hire a Uhaul.
Empty the water into some big containers until the rock starts to come out
of the water...this is to ensure you do not disturb detritus.
Move all the stuff into bags, any LR that looks like it clear of attached
inverts just wrap in wet newspaper ( I use tea towels...to my wife's obvious
delight). Stuff with life on it, bag up with plenty of water and store all
in the poly-boxes.
remove as much CLEAN water as possible ( i would also test the water to see
if it any good or not)
When you get to sand, personally if you can manage it, leave it in and move
the entire thing with a few inches of water. If not, scrape it into a
rubbermaid container or something....
Load it up drive home.
get it out and where you want it...
Now comes the hard part!
Wash that sand. The best way I found to do this is with a big net. Scoop
some sand into the net, immerse it in some salt water in a bucket, and mix
it by squeezing the outside of the bag, repeat twice more, each time with
different salt water. Do this for all the sand, the first bucket will be
filthy, the second will be nasty and the third dirty...but the sand is
relatively clean and still full of life.
Add water (old if possible)....try not to disturb the sand too much, avoid
clouding the tank. Add rock ( I would consider a quick wash of the rock if
it is dirty....)Add new water and get it up to temp' and slowly fill the
tank with the rock. Acclimatize the fish and inverts...let them lose. get
all equipment running, clean the glass, mop the floor sit back and enjoy a
beer.
There you have it....worked for me many times.
Regards,
Paul Whitby.

Subject: moving a big tank
Hello everyone, well I got real lucky and found a 180 gallon reef tank
setup
for sale. Problem is I have to move it to my house and the guy lives 1.5
hours away. Any helpful do's and dont's out there. What would be the best
way for the fish and invertabrates?? What about the live rock??
Any help appreciated
Steve
