In the name of political correctness, a committee with the power to name
fish has decided to change the name of the jewfish to Goliath grouper.
Joseph Nelson of the University of Alberta -- who heads the Committee on
Names of Fishes -- said there was public support of the change. "We received
petitions which lead us to strongly believe that the name -- while not
offensive to all Jews -- is offensive to a great number," he said.
The tasty fish -- once a favorite quarry of south Florida fishermen --
is currently protected because it has been over fished in the past and is
losing its habitat. It can grow to weigh several hundred pounds.
The reaction in the Jewish community in south Florida was lukewarm.
"Stereotypes about Jews have resulted in everything from murder to
social discrimination,' said Arthur Teitelbaum, the Anti-Defamation League's
southern area director. But he added, "In my experience, the jewfish has
never been an energizing factor."
There are more important issues, like peace in the Middle East, he said.
It's the first time since 1948 that a fish's name has been changed for
political correctness. The name of the squawfish was changed to the pike
minnow at the request of Native Americans on the West Coast.
