Hi,
Approx 8 months ago, I wrote the group asking for help with 2 short tentacle
plate (Fungia dania) corals that were dying.
The flesh was pealing down to the skeleton all over. I received many answers
from the group. The best answer I received was to leave the coral alone, do
not remove it after it appears to be dead.
I followed this advice. After a few months, just as I was going to remove
them and throw then away, I saw what appeared to be either mushrooms or
anenome's growing on the skeleton. I noticed that the colors where similar
to the original plate.
They were rather beautiful so I left them in the tank, can't throw away a
living thing. as they grew they looked more and more like anenome's swaying
in the current.
I took some digital shots and showed them to my lfs(Aquating Treasures, in
Queens, NY), he also thought that they were anenome's and started to
research them. Two of the small anenome's died a few weeks ago and I noticed
that they had skeletons forming below them. I mentioned that to my lfs, we
continued our research.
I saw him today and he confirmed what I had thought, My "dead" Fungias gave
birth to new Fungias. Probably 50 or more per disk.
Now the big question, what happens next. do they break off of the parent
Fungia and develop as separate corals?
To all of you that have helped me in the past, Thank you.
Bob Stuhl
