Cindy,
These are definitely nano reefs. You are looking at just above 4 gallons
each. I would not try and keep sps in these at all. In order to get enough
light to them, your water would heat up way to high. Not only that, but you
would have to try and maintain alk and calcium levels, and to do so in such
a micro environment could be extremely difficult. Stick with polyps,
mushrooms and such. Once you know the tanks are running okay, you could
consider adding some xenia or something like that.
That being said, the MHs would be way way too much for these tanks. The heat
would be overwhelming, and would cause your water to heat up to temperatures
that the animals could not live in. If you know the tanks are going to be
side by side, then I would probably use a couple of 24 inch NO florescent
tubes. One daylight and one actinic. That would give you around 5 watts per
gallon, and with NO bulbs, that should be about right for the animals I
mentioned above, and you would not have any heat problems.
I would really try and do the water changes weekly, and if you have an
adequate amount of live rock and stick to hardy animals, you wont need a
skimmer.
IMO
