Hi JCD,
I have a Korallin reactor and its superb, the best reactor I or any of my
friends have used so far. I upgraded from a Knop 'C' reactor on my 150Gal
(UK) reef because the knop wasn't man enough for the job... and it got
clogged all the time or the excess CO2 would evacuate the water below the
media causing the pump to run dry... etc
The Korallin on the other hand is a very well built bit of kit that I would
highly recommend. It is very well made and sturdy, with a good bubble
counter. Advantages over the knop are that the gas goes into the reactor
through the circulation pump so the bubbles get smashed by the impellar to
tiny bubbles that 'dissolve' into the water faster. The water circulates up
through the media so the silt doesn't collect at the bottom and clog the
reactor. Over here in the UK the Knop C and Korallin 1501 are the same
price, and yet the Korallin is far better built and holds loads more media.
Another good feature is that any excess gas collects at the top of the
reaction chamber where you can bleed it of manually every so often (about
once per week for my bubble rate).
I use Knops Koralith media in my reactor and I get through about 3kg's
(6.6lbs) every 6 months or so...
If I run it at 22 bubbles per minute I get 32DKh and 500+ppm of calcium out
of the reactor. This is enough to keep my tank levels at 10Dkh and 450ppm
calcium, and my tank is 90% hard corals with many clams etc..
Any questions that you have on the reactor I will be happy to try and
answer.
On another note I drip the reactor return water through a pot of shells to
disperse any residual CO2 and I also have a Kalkwasser reactor that comes on
at night for 12 mins every 3 hours putting a total of 3 litres of limewater
into the tank to stabilise my Ph over night. If you put to much gas through
the CO2 reactor it will lower your Ph (just putting on my fire proof jacket
and awaiting the flaming for that comment!!) - IMO
Hope this long waffle helps...
Kind regards
Jules
PS. Here's the web address for kaorallin and Bob Goemans has doen a review
of the reactor for them: http://www.korallin.de/frmst2.htm
