All,

This weekend I fired up a calcium reactor that I had made from an old water
filter housing. The reactor has a 3/4 inch pvc + at the top. The + is an
intersection where all the "outputs" from the pumps and CO2 to the reactor
meet. I have the main output pump in one side of the +, the recirulation
output on the other, the CO2 output on the other and finally the whole thing
attaches to the top of the reactor. When I run water through the reactor,
the water backflows through the CO2 line and back to the bubble counter.
Currently, I dont have a check valve.

My question is this, is that normal or do I have a design flaw? If you guys
who have reactors were to run them w/o a check valve in the CO2 line, would
the water backflow? Do I just need to add a check valve or do I need to move
the output of the CO2 to another location? Right now, it is tied in to the
other outputs to the pumps, so it may be getting more pressure than normal.
If I move it to, say the input to the recirculation pump, would that lessen
the amount of backpressure on  the CO2 line?

Either way, I am going to install a check valve, but I would like to have as
little back pressure on the CO2 line as possible.
