Thanks for all the thoughtful replies. I haven't seen many topics where the
opinions were unanimous (GRIN) ! This may have been one of those "freak
out" things referred to, as I had been running it such that only the thick
brown sludge pumped out (about half a cup/week). When it really started
pumping mostly water I tried cutting the air way back and changing to new
airstones, but if there was air pressure enough to make bubbles reach the
top, it brought mostly water (and too much of that).
Given the improved look of the inhabitants, I'm going to scale
back it's use, gradually increasing the amount of time per week that it
gets run. I guess common sense says, let the critters be the judge. I just
didn't want a disaster to creep up on me (them).
