Coraline is a low light loving algae. It does best under low to medium light
(or on the higher end of the specturm if VHOs or PCs are being used). MHs
often are too much for it, and will cause it to turn white, or receed. Some
species can survive under MHs, but even those do not really thrive under
them. Even those that have MHs and have coraline alage growth do not have
the growth rate or colors that they would have if they did not run MHs. VHOs
work well to grow coraline, and even NO lights are adequate for good
coraline alage growth (with enough bulbs). With lower light, and adequate
calcium and alkalinity, coraline is actually a pretty fast growing organism.

Watts per gallon is a term that has been in the "fish community" for a long
time. It is a basic measure for how much light someone is using on their
tank, and is discussed in terms of how much water volume a tank can hold,
and I figure it empty. It is actually a somewhat dangerous way to discuss
lighting, becuase shapes from tank to tank vary (height is important here),
as does the distance from the water that the lights are mounted, height of
substrate and many other things. It is a very basic general way to make a
ballpark decision if lighting is proper for a tank. When using it, you get
an idea, and then adjust from there.

Hope this sheds some light (pun also intended) on this subject for you!!
