Chris,
The MH/VHO hood sits on a "collar" about ten inches tall, so the
lights aren't too close to yhe water surface. I'm sure the MH heat would
require a chiller going full time if they were closer. As it was, I ended up
breaking a hole through a cinder block wall (the only option in that room)
to install an airconditioner so the ambient temperature could be lowered (to
help the tank temp). I'm changine the system simply because one of the three
mh fixtures went out and I don't have a clue as to how to repair it. I'm
having someone install the retrofit kit in the existing setup tonight. It
will still sit up on the collar since that's what provides acces to the
tank!. I went pretty high on the pc wattage because they will be elevated
over the water surface. All the critters did do well with the old setup, it
was just pooping out on me.
HTH,
Larry
