Again, subject to debate, but.... IMO, the PCs or VHO are still the best way
to go. The main difference is that the VHOs are going to give you a spread
out light source. They cover the tank almost equally from end to end. With
an E ballast, you can use any combo of length bulbs, so if you want to dim
the tank in an area, you can just use shorter bulbs here or there. The MHs,
once you decide on a wattage of bulb, that is it. Then, if you decide it is
too much, you have to begin trying eggcrate, rock caves etc. The MHS are a
point source light. Another words, they are extrememly bright at the bulb,
and in a small area around it. Then they decrease in intensity the further
away from the bulb you go. You could go with one, and then do a clam or
something directly below it, and then do the LPS and Soft Corals out and
away from it, but proper placement becomes quite a bit more challenging.

As you have read, there are some on the list that have had great success
with LPS and MHS, I am just not one of those, and I think it is easier to
keep them under PCs or VHO.
