As Billingsley stood by the bed, he could actually see Hatfield’s already frail condition becoming worse, as he choked for breath. Hatfield gestured frantically for something to write on. Billingsley quickly obliged Hatfield with a pen and a piece of paper. Hatfield used up his last ounce of strength to scribble a note to Billingsley, and looking into his eyes, clutched it into his hand tightly. Just as Hatfield pressed the note into Billingsley’s hand, he died. Unable to read the note right away in his grief, Billingsley put the note in his jacket pocket. A few days later as Billingsley was talking to Hatfield’s family at the wake, he realized that the note was in the jacket pocket that he was wearing. He announced to the family, “Hat handed me a note just before he died.
