Hey Y'all!!

I would like to introduce myself quickly, because this is my first post to
this list, and also extend an invitation.

My name is Juan Sequeda and I am a Ph.D student in Computer Science at UT
and also the CTO of Smartbridge GmBH, a Swiss startup company. I am also the
co-founder of Semantic Web Austin. I am a devoted Semantic Web evangelist,
PHP developer, salsa dancer and world traveler! I am looking forward to
start engaging more in the Refresh Austin community!

Now to my invitation!! Semantic Web Austin is going to host our first big
event of 2009: Linked Data Tutorial!

*What is Linked Data?*

Linked Data is about using Web technologies to connect data that is related
but stored in different locations. These locations may be as diverse as
databases maintained by organizations in different geographical locations,
or simply heterogeneous databases, applications and services within one
organization that have not previously shared data in an automated fashion.
The Linked Data principles define a set of norms for publishing and
connecting data using Web standards. By following these principles, data
publishers can make it easier for that data to be reused in other
applications. Just imagine data on the web linked and accessible to
everybody, which will allow to create mashup applications, without learning
the APIs for each specific datasource.

*Who is using Linked Data?*

Some examples of applications using the power of Linked Data are Faviki (
faviki.com) which is a social bookmarking tool that allows to tag Web pages
with semantic tags" coming from Wikipedia. Another example of social
bookmarking is Zemanta (zemanta.com) which is a stargate enabling to jump
from plain text to Linked Data. Something similar to that is what OpenCalais
(opencalais.com) from Reuters is also doing. BBC in the UK has released
their Music beta site (www.bbc.co.uk/music/beta) which is a mashup site
about music that consumes Link Data. A mobile application that uses Linked
Data is DBpedia Mobile (http://beckr.org/DBpediaMobile/) which is based on
the GPS of your mobile devices and shows a map of nearby locations that
come from Linked Data.

*In other words ...*

It doesn't matter if you are calling it Web 2.0, Web 3.0, the Semantic Web,
the Web of Data, or the Giant Global Graph. What we are interested is making
the web's data more valuable, interoperable and accessible.

*Sounds cool! How can I learn more?*

Semantic Web Austin is hosting an All Day Linked Data Tutorial. Our speaker
will be Dr. Tom Heath (tomheath.com) from the UK, one of the main
researchers and developers of Linked Data. However we have a slight issue
regarding the date. Due to the fact that our speaker is coming from the
other side of the world, he will only be able to come to Austin on
Valetine's Day weekend. Therefore, there are two options for the tutorial;
either *Friday February 13* or *Saturday February 14*. How are we going to
decide? Well, we are going to let you decide! Please follow this link
http://doodle.com/qwch4g4nayzcgdnf and choose which day is the best.

This is Semantic Web Austin's first big event of 2009, and surely not the
last one! We are really looking forward to your participation! If you have
any questions, please contact me (juansequeda.com / [email protected])

Looking forward to getting in touch with you all soon!
