Well if you are familiar with Wordpress or any other CMS it shouldn't be too hard to figure out. There are a lot of mods for it and I would suggest running it off a local server to test its capabilites. This is basically a CMS framework meaning it gives it a lot of latitude to modify the fuctionality of whatever website you are trying to make. The main thing to ask is why MODX and not something else? What does your client need in terms of capability compared to another CMS like Joomla or Drupal? Just something to ask them and yourself.
Also look up on MODX website what sites are MODX to see what is possiable.
