Though I was not the one that requested this information, it came at a perfect time for me as well. I want to thank Russell for the Shopp recommendation and add in a fresh review.
I had been struggling with WP e-commerce for a little over a month. It has plenty of bugs and little documentation. I am now finishing off the shopping cart using Shopp and it has been much easier. I still had some customization on my end but it has been substantially easier. I was going to try Zencart but decided it was just too darn ugly and too much work to make it better without looking like a million other badly designed sites. In addition, Zencart and OSCommerce were both overkill for what I needed. As for Shopp, I customized it so all of the system text was in a file similar to WP e-commerce. I wanted a one stop place to edit the text and digging through all of the php files to do so was too much of a pain. I also altered the forms to use legends and fieldsets. The main drawback I have with Shopp is there are too many steps before completing a purchase. Add to cart, confirm purchase, payment form, thank you. I'd like to combine the payment and confirmation into one since there is an ajax cart you can use on any page but the way the plugin is written, you'd have to edit the non-template php code and it could get overwritten if you upgrade the plugin. The monetary cost of Shopp is worth it due to the amount of time you will spend trying to fix and force WP e-commerce or make Zencart and OSCommerce look better.
