BTW, we're on the brink of needing to replace any phone icons out there too.

I'm with Keith on this.
I think you'd have to think about the broader concept of the action and the
deeper meaning to be technology agnostic for this icon.  Maybe something to
indicate protection?  I still don't have an answer but I was thinking along
the lines of a lock metaphor.

What about a gesture for saving?  Just have everyone make the sign of the
cross?  I'm kidding of course, but it's interesting to think about as
interaction methods start changing.
