*City to celebrate technology at 11th Annual GIS Day*
**

Geography Awareness Week is here and Mr. GIS is ready to make his appearance
at this year’s celebration of geospatial and mapping technologies. Complete
with its own mascot and theme song, the 11th Annual City of Austin GIS Day
kicks off at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18 at Austin City Hall.

The daylong interactive celebration, which celebrates Geographic Information
Systems technology, seeks to educate and inform through an entertaining,
light-hearted approach. This year’s event will include the return of the Map
Gallery, which now includes 3D and Interactive Mapping, GIS Challenge and
Map Contest Awards, City department booths, GIS presentations and hands-on
demonstrations. It will also feature a fresh approach on a GIS Game Show in
which participants will attempt to stump some of the brightest minds in GIS
and a demonstration by the Watershed Protection Department’s new Development
Viewer using Silverlight technology.

In an effort to inform the public on how we are all affected and “Tied
Together with GIS” (which happens to be this year’s theme), the City is
offering in-school presentations on GIS technology at 13 local schools. On
Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 16 and 17, presenters from various City of Austin
departments, including Public Works, Watershed Protection, Planning and
Development Review, Communications and Technology Management, Austin Police
and Austin Water Utility, will address over 1,500 students ranging from 1st
to 12th grade on the benefits, usages and opportunities associated with
Geographic Information Systems.

GIS Day began in 1998 when a small troop of City of Austin geographers and
cartographers, armed with their newly developed GIS technology, converged on
the Austin Children’s Museum displaying maps and setting up one computer to
show high-resolution black and white aerials. Today, more than 15 City of
Austin departments utilize the technology to solve everyday problems and
strategically plan for the future.

The event is open to the public and parking at City Hall is free with
validation. Proof of attendance is available for students.
