I'd love to hear more about the significant limitations of Joomla you found compared with Drupal, Matt.

We used Joomla on a number of projects as well. There were many things we liked about Joomla but ultimately found that there were significant limitations that Drupal did not have.

No question though - our experience is that Joomla developers LOVE Joomla and Drupal developers LOVE Drupal. Is there a site that shows the Fortune 500 companies that are using Joomla? Here is a great list of those using Drupal - http://websites.usandv.com/who-is-using-drupal .

Full disclosure, I'm a Joomla enthusiast and strictly Joomla
developer. That said;

While I agree it's important to work outside of any frameworks/CMS to
get an understanding of PHP, I'm really enjoying developing with the
Joomla MVC, and especially the Joomla component JDump, which shows a
variable dump organized in a neat graphic display for everything from
strings to objects.

It's been a great pairing for me and has really strengthened my
understanding of OO as I write code and can track objects with their
methods and properties in my own code as well as in the Joomla
framework.

Just my two cents, let the flames roar.
