I use Evernote for notes/snippets/et al. I highly recommend it. You can use tags and different notebooks for sorting by topic/subject matter whatever. With the local application things are stored locally in addition to the cloud. It is nice because I can use it on all my Macs, iPad, and Windows computers. I'm not sure if they have a Ubuntu or Linux port but I would not be surprised. There is also some good clipper functionality for when you find new code (or any text) to use and adding to your notebooks with tags.
