Funding available to help Austin stay on top of emerging technologies

Sept. 28, 2010

Grant funding to area organizations that foster digital inclusion is now
available through the City of Austin’s Grant for Technology Opportunities
Program.

The program, started in 2000 by the Austin Community Technology and
Telecommunications Commission, strives to create a community where everyone
has access to facilities and the necessary skills to participate in an
emerging digital society.

Grants totaling $150,000 will be awarded in this 11th year of the program.
Organizations may apply at www.gtops.org. Deadline for application is Dec.
2.

"As the rapid pace of technology threatens to leave entire portions of our
community behind, GTOPs is an important tool in helping local organizations
ensure that all of us possess the skills of and access to the technologies
of the digital world," Commission Chair Kedron Touvell said.

Previous GTOPs grants have funded projects that include:

   - Building a computer lab for at-risk youth.
   - Creating computer classes for non-native English speakers and the
   elderly.
   - Providing multimedia training to low-income students.
   - Placing free computers and Internet access in the homes of Austin’s
   working poor.

Additionally, the City is seeking volunteers to serve as grant reviewers. An
application to serve on the grant review committee can be found at
www.gtops.org.
