The Austin Memory Project is a 10-year long multi-method research
project that explores the historical and current dynamics of cultural
resource distribution, historical segregation patterns, and
intergenerational social and cultural capital transmission of the
immigrant communities in Austin, Texas from 1875 - 2000. The
historical mapping data can be accessed through the online GIS system
- the Cultural Resource Explorer.

Austin Internet and Global Citizens Survey

Who are we?

We are a small research team of professors and graduate students in
the Department of Radio-TV-Film at the University of Texas at Austin
(UT), who are interested in the study of how a variety of people use
communications media and technology, such as the Internet, TV, radio,
and newspapers. For this project, we have joined hands with the City
of Austin’s Office of Telecommunications and Regulatory Affairs, who
are interested in the same information to better plan city services in
telecommunications, cable TV and Internet services.

What is the purpose of the project?

Our questionnaire survey project aims to explore the general usage
patterns of communications media and technology among residents of the
City of Austin. In particular, this study is primarily interested in
understanding the current state of who is using, or not, and why,
several kinds of media in the new digital media environment and the
personal or other factors that either encourage or inhibit one’s
engagement with advanced digital technology.

Some of the questions that we intend to explore through the project
are as follows:

How do Austin residents access and use general entertainment and
information media, such as newspapers, radio, and TV?

How do Austin residents access and use new communications media, such
as cell phones, computers, and the Internet?

How do Austin residents access and use information media and resources
offered by the City of Austin?

How do personal differences—such as differences in gender, age, place
of birth, education, parental influences, network of friends—among
Austin residents relate to their access to and use of media and
technology?
