The Forum’s goal is to engage and educate the Austin community about the numerous ways in which science and technology enhance the quality of their everyday life, as well as the health, prosperity and security of the nation. The event takes place the first Tuesday of each month at the beautiful AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center, Amphitheater (#204). Future Shock: What Does the Day After Tomorrow Look Like? Dr. Dan Reed, Corporate Vice President, Technology Policy and Strategy and eXtreme Computing Group, Microsoft http://www.facebook.com/HPCDan Tuesday, June 7, 2011 5:45 p.m. – Networking Reception 6:30 p.m. – Presentation Join us on June 7 for an exciting session with Dr. Dan Reed, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President, Technology Policy and Strategy (TS&P) and the eXtreme Computing Group (XCG). Dr. Reed will discuss disruptive technology trends as well as the opportunities and challenges that they present from business, technical and social and policy perspectives. Dr. Reed’s role at Microsoft is twofold: To be a forward thinking, to look at disruptive technologies, and help educate both Microsoft and the world at large about the potential impact of those technologies, not one or two years in the future, but five or ten years in the future – the major sea changes, and societal impacts we all need to consider. To take nascent technologies and build advanced prototypes of what the future could be, so that we can live in that future and understand its implications—to inform Microsoft’s strategies as well as the larger ecosystem of policies and economies in which they need to live. Dr. Reed will highlight the today’s most important trends–how old and new technologies are rapidly evolving and morphing, partners and competitors are blending and business models are in flux. He will describe our next fundamental shift; moving toward a new world of interconnected devices and cloud services that will dramatically change how people interact with computing—for individuals, businesses and society as a whole. Given the broad availability of inexpensive embedded intelligence and the emergence of new natural user interfaces coupled with a range of wired and wireless communication technologies and massive cloud data centers and services, computers can begin to work on our behalf, launching speculative activities based upon context and user behavior, anticipating our needs and delivering a new generation of experiences.
