If you spend some time with the privacy settings almost any service can
mostly be private these days, even Facebook. With Google+, you can't
actually see other peoples circles as to how many and what they're called,
but you can tell by default who they have added in general and who have add
them. However, you can choose not to share that information and most
everything else by editing your profile. I just played with the privacy
settings to confirm. Though the UI is not always clear that something has
been made private, there is a preview mode in which you can impersonate a
user to verify that the settings are correct.

Looks like they learned from the backlash with Buzz and it probably helped
that Facebook has ironed out a lot of the privacy kinks.
