Hey everyone, I want to throw this idea out and see if there's any interest for a colocation cooperative in Austin. The basic idea is that we get together to sign a lease on an entire rack at a local Austin datacenter and then parse out 1U increments to members at a much reduced cost. More information can be found here:
http://corack.org/ The motivation for me is being able to have a large server (16-32 gigs/RAM, 3-5TB) to do personal backups and host a few small sites, for about the same cost that I'm currently paying EC2 & Linode for much less hardware. I'm also interested to know if you think this is a bad idea. There are certainly some issues we'd have to work out - the most serious that comes to mind is server security, where you'd basically have to trust each rack key-holder to be careful of others' servers. All datacenters will require some sort of sign-in process, so at least we'd know who broke something, but I'm not sure there's a way to guarantee isolation. Any other downsides? --Victor @victortrac -- Our Web site: http://www.RefreshAustin.org/ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Refresh Austin" group.
