Tuesday, Nov. 29 | Game Changers Double Feature 4 p.m. | John Doggett "Ugly Baby Glasses: Debt, Global Competition and America’s Future" John Doggett will talk about how America’s crushing debt burden is limiting America’s ability to compete just as China, India and Brazil are becoming world class economies. He will give examples of the new and innovative ways these countries are competing on a global basis. The good news is that if Americans stop complaining (whining) about China and start taking advantage of our inherent strengths, America can turn things around. He will conclude by talking about an area of innovation that really excites him: generating electricity from the ocean. 7 p.m. | Jay Boisseau "Supercomputing and the Transformation of Science and Society" Computing technologies were invented to help solve mathematical equations for science and engineering, but have now become so ubiquitous in our daily lives that we often take them for granted. However, the importance of computing technologies for advancing science continues to grow, and their role in transforming society is expanding rapidly. Jay Boisseau will lead a conversation about how supercomputing is advancing our understanding of the physical universe and transforming the world for the good of all. Both talks are in Studio 6A at the KLRU studios. RSVP to reserve your seat in Studio 6A by emailing [email protected] Please note in the subject line if you are attending the Doggett taping, the Boisseau taping or both tapings. About the Speakers: John Doggett has been an award-winning senior lecturer at the university's McCombs School of Business since 1989. He has extensive business and consulting experience with firms of all sizes in Asia, Europe and the United States. Doggett has also taught seminars on global competition and entrepreneurship at universities in Austria, Chile, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, Singapore and Taiwan. His latest project is to turn his speeches into a book that will both challenge and inspire Americans to stop whining and start competing again. The tentative title is “Ugly Baby Glasses: Debt, Global Competition and America’s Future.” Jay Boisseau is the director of the university's Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC). Under his leadership over the last 10 years, TACC has grown into one of the leading advanced computing centers in the world. Boisseau has led several successful proposals and projects, including the $59 million award from the National Science Foundation to provide the Ranger HPC system in 2008, and Stampede, a 10-petaflop HPC system, to be deployed in 2013.
