Eric, in my experience most solutions to go through thick walls require some testing. I haven't seen a one size fits all solution yet.
In the past I've had good luck with repeaters and antennas. Both are in the DYI side as commercial WIFI extenders are usually pretty awful. It's ridiculously easy to do even for people like me :) http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template2/ I'm assuming you'll have to use some kind of WIFI at some point. Good luck.
