Hello,
I wanted to give a little update on an iPhone apps development class that
I'm teaching through the School of Journalism (world has changed) at the
University of Texas and invite everyone here to come to our Demo Day on
April 27 <http://www.eventbrite.com/event/5378617590> in the new Belo
Center for New Media. I wrote about the demo day
here<http://robquig.tumblr.com/post/43970858280/iphone-apps-taking-shape-at-the-university-of-texas>,

and it includes links to the student project Facebook pages. Judges on demo
day include top editors at the state's newspapers, the director of the
J-School and some Austin tech leaders.
Why should you come to Demo Day? The students are building great products
and their enthusiasm is fantastic.
I have 13 journalism and 13 computer science students, mostly undergrads,
working in five teams in a startup atmosphere. Since it is a journalism
class, I'm teaching the CS students to communicate well, and I'm teaching
the journalism students to code. Everyone is learning how to be a
developer, following a modified agile methodology.
The students pitched their products at the start of the semester and have
been working hard in hopes of having them in the App Store by the demo day.
We have four iPhone apps in progress, including a Instagram-like app for
live music, a location-based social news app, a journalism study guide and
a guide to events surround Formula One week in Austin. One team is building
an iPad app to make collages with your Facebook photos.
Joshua McClure of RealMassive has been assisting in the class and Jeff
Linwood, who I met through the last Refresh meeting, has been volunteering
in labs to help the students with code. Oliva Hayes, who I met through this
Google group, gave a great guest lecture on design and the Washington
Post's mobile design director, who I knew through a journalism convention,
did a Skype session.
Countless people through this Refresh group have assisted me with advice
and guidance, so thank you all.
The UT J-School is undergoing a huge transition to not only digital, but
to cutting-edge digital. This transformation will continue as I expect to
add more programming/development classes in the coming semesters. If you
want to be a part of our future, please add contact info to this
document<https://docs.google.com/document/d/18J6Td0FtDWfo-R1YYHZbG91seLdPryOd_lnNtb36mhU/edit?usp=sharing>.

I tend to lose emails, so this will help me a lot. RIght now, there
wouldn't be much (if any) money in it for you, but I am seeking funding
from journalistic foundations.
I really hope to see a lot of you at Demo Day. Tell your coworkers and
friends about it, but please RSVP<http://www.eventbrite.com/event/5378617590>so
the students can see that there's some excitement around this.

 Thanks!
 Robert Quigley
