Jim,
I put the IDN extensions into two buckets:
IDN Code Point Validation:
IDN Language Tag - Use of 3-letter language with server-side mapping to
language table or script table (commingle filter)
IDN Mapping - Use of IDN table identifier that directly maps to the
language or script table. The IDN table identifiers are specific to each
server, which is the reason for the IDN Table extension to enable the client to
discover the correct IDN table identifier.
IDN - TANGO - Mix of the IDN Language Tag and the IDN Mapping, by
supporting either a language or a script.
IDN Table - Discovery of script table needed for the IDN Mapping
IDN Variant Management:
Related Domain - Support for related domain names sharing common
attributes (e.g., sponsorship and optionally registrant) with or without server
policy enforcement.
Strict Bundling - Support for a composite relationship of a primary IDN
domain name and its variants
IDN - TANGO - Support for a composite relationship with "attribute
mode" and independent related domain names with "object mode".
Domain Variants (draft-galvin-regext-epp-variants) - Supports the
concept of a primary IDN domain name and a variant group that are separate
domain names that share sponsorship with the primary IDN as the anchor
(transfer and deletes applies to the entire variant group).
I personally found IDN - TANGO as an interesting extension with support for
both buckets. See
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1WR00oB43XZCDqD0zvRvRajuWAq_9wQ3c0RrFKlGC3So
for the analysis of these extensions.
Thanks,

Speaking as a participant:
Thanks Jim. I agree with you that broader work on IDNs would be a good thing
for this working group. The extension analysis work is a good place to start.
I wanted to note that a prior version of the variants draft had examples and
XML included. We dropped them in this version when we revised the document to
present the work as “related groups” not variants. We’ll certainly bring that
back.
I’m also interested in whether or not you think IDN variants should be
addressed directly in any of the other extensions? I don’t think so but you’ve
done a deeper dive so perhaps you’ve got a question to consider.
Thanks,
Jim
