==== Description: ====
vfrnav is a flight planning and navigation application for flights under
visual flight rules (VFR). During planning, waypoints can be entered using a
variety of means, like entering coordinates, from a database, as
bearing/distance from a known point, or by clicking on a (vector) map. During
flight, various information displays provide moving maps, numeric deviation
from planned course, as well as GPS status information. However, since this
application is not going to be certified in any way, it should not be used as
primary navigation means.
vfrnav is intended to run on desktop/laptop computers running GNU/Linux or
any other Unix like operating system, as well as on small portable devices,
like Nokia N8xx.
Databases are stored in sqlite3 database files. The package includes GUI
editors for aviation databases, i.e. the airport, airspace, navaids and
waypoints databases.
The current code is (temporarily) at:
http://sailer.dynip.lugs.ch/vfrnav-0.1.tar.gz
==== Other Software Required: ====
gtkmm and friends (libglademm, libgtkmm, libglade, libgdkmm, libpangomm,
libcairomm, libglibmm, libsigc), pilot-link (for backward compatibility to my
old palmpilot app), sqlite3, libsqlite3x (http://blog.s11n.net/?p=20),
zfstream (http://www.wanderinghorse.net/computing/zfstream/), gpsd
==== Other Comments: ====
While the programs work without any additional external data, the software is
more useful when some 3rd party databases are incorporated:
For map drawing, SRTM30
(http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/srtm/cbanddataproducts.html) (or the older
GTOPO30), as well as vmap0
(http://earth-info.nga.mil/publications/vmap0.html) can be used (the package
includes command line tools to convert these databases into the internal
sqlite3 format). Both databases seem to be under the public domain
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vector_Map#Level_Zero_.28VMAP0.29) though NIMA
want redistributors to acknowledge them as data source.
AFAIK there is no good free aviation database, so the user needs to enter
this information by himself.
