==== Description: ====
LibreEDA is a project that I had in mind since few years, as an electronics
and software engineer and a open-source proponent, I am saddened each time I
have to use proprietary Electronic Design Automation tools.
Free software exists in that domain (see http://geda.seul.org), but none of
them achieve 1% of what proprietary EDA SW provides.
One of the reason is, I think, that none of the existing libre SW is based on
a solid framework.
My goal is to provide a tool as powerful and modular as FreeCAD
(http://www.freecadweb.org/), but applied to electronics engineering instead
of mechanical engineering.
I have no code so far, but I would like to use gna as a platform to bootstrap
this project, especially for discussions, design ideas, market analysis and
task management.
When it comes to licenses, I'm planning to use:
- LGPL for libraries
- GPL for executables
- CC for assets (non-SW reusable data), and documentation
==== Other Software Required: ====
There is potential for non-libre dependencies in a far future when addressing
FPGA design (to my knowledge, it is not possible yet to create a OpenCores
based design without using the FPGA manufacturer's proprietary tools),
although, I'm not expecting to hit that wall before few years, as there is a
huge amount of work to be done on the basic features (library, schematics,
simulation, signal integrity and PCB).
These are dependencies on non-libre 3rd party executables, not libraries.
Other dependencies will be libre-software, you can get a fair overview of
dependency candidates at http://spins.fedoraproject.org/fel/#portfolio
The project will be based on the Qt C++ framework (http://qt-project.org/)
