Nate - do you want to help with the implementation? I've volunteered to do this work, but it is taking some time to acclimate myself to the codebase. The Empathy core developers don't seem particularly interested in this feature, so I think those of us stomping our feet oughta pitch in.
The architecture is really pretty simple, the meat seems to be in a Handler component which is designed to be able to be supplanted, afaict.
