I finally got around to trying Nicholas' one-line patch, and so far, so good. Thanks for all your help.
I'm attaching my patch file. I created a patched amd64 deb, which I could also upload if anyone else wants to install. Don't have an x86 install to compile that, but I could upload all my files zipped if anyone wants that.
