Given the desire that we have for people who are running the normal desktop to find it easy to try out Unity, it is worth investing some time into researching the cause of this bug. There will be a LOT of people who have existing Gnome Panel and Gnome Session settings and try the Unity session; we don't want them to have a crashy experience.
