This seems essential to me in order that the messaging menu entry can
fully replace the tray icon for xchat (as it should):

Clicking the xchat tray icons toggles the displayed/hidden state of the
xchat window. When doing without the tray icon, there is no longer a
quick way to hide the xchat window at present, as closing the window
quits the application altogether. Using the minimize button is not ideal
as it clutters up the task bar.
