I confirm JoePub's workaround on Lucid with alsa-driver 1.0.22.1+dfsg- 0ubuntu3.
Output from 'arecord -l' and 'amixer' available from my bug at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/620891/+attachment/1502487/+files/noCDinput1.txt Bug seems to be specific to ALC889A (and probably only this board series). Will try on Maverick when time allows. The workaround seems to be a proper solution for such a specific issue.
