@ Micha I am behind a proxy at an university campus. I just tested it and you are correct that I am able to connect to Gtalk and Facebook chat even when I remove the global proxy settings. My browser, MSN, ICQ, synaptic, and so forth however do not work, so I assumed the proxy settings would be needed for all connections. Sorry for the confusion.
