I can also confirm this bug in Lucid. LVDS: 1280x800 VGA: 1280x1024 Placing the monitors horizontally gives me a "deadzone" on LVDS because of the difference in resolution (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libxrandr/+bug/373367).
