FWIW, I found a PPA to get newer versions of network-manager on Lucid:

trunk builds for ubuntu):

It seems to work for me, but YMMV (you shouldn't probably do this if you
are not able to "fix" network connectivity without the help of network-
manager, e.g. using command-line tools).

Don't complain... I give no refund in case your machine breaks :p
