I would suggest *against* adding "the" for this. Menu items are not about forming grammatically correct complete sentences.
HIG specifies not to overuse these http://library.gnome.org/devel/gdp- style-guide/stable/grammar.html.en Also, no other menu items use "the"/"a" unnecessarily. Eg: nautilus File menu > is Create Folder , Create Document. and everywhere else in all applications it is the same pattern. Adding "the" here would mean bringing in a new inconsistency.
