I have this problem as well: suspend does not work when closing laptop lid, but does work when manually selected.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10, on an HP/Compaq nc6220. I'd like to second comment #137, this bug is an important safety issue -- laptops can easily overheat if they are not properly suspended and mistakenly put into an cushioned/insulating carrying bag.
