Just checking back, every 6 months, ... I suppose it is still a "feature" of the nm-applet (after 2 years it cannot be considered a bug) that it shall start only for the user that logs in first, and that the others deserve to be kept in the dark. (Not to mention being offered any functionality.) If so, I recommend tossing gnome and using KDE.
