Jim, we're not running Shotwell inside a vbox. We got Shotwell on our "real" system, and virtualbox installed next to it. Virtualbox creates a user group, which your user has to be part of in order to use virtualbox correctly. This group "vboxuser" grants raw access to USB devices - so it seems.
