gnome-terminal sets TERM for you. And Guake never set it, libvte did, which is what changed. I made some instructions on how to work around this before it was fixed in GDM. Assuming you use Ubuntu (or other flavor which has profile.d) follow them: http://joelslinux.blogspot.com/2010/10/ubuntu-maverick-term-variable.html Othewise change it so that you add the line directly to /etc/profile.
