The nineteenth Annual European Conference of the Regional Studies Association 2013, entitled "Shape and be Shaped: The Future Dynamics of Regional Development" takes place this year in Tampere, Finland.
Tampere is one of the most rapidly developing regions in Finland, and the largest inland center in the Nordic countries. Tampere's city center is surrounded by lake and ridge scenery, sited on an isthmus between two lakes. Tampere is a center of leading-edge technology, research, education, culture, sports and business. The City of Tampere came first in an image survey comparing the largest cities in Finland. It is also the most attractive city among Finns who plan on moving. The Regional Studies Association (RSA) works with its international membership to facilitate the highest standards of theoretical development, empirical analysis and policy debate of issues at this sub-national scale, incorporating both the urban and rural and different conceptions of space such as city-regions and interstitial spaces. RSA is, for example, interested in issues of economic development and growth, conceptions of territory and its governance and in thorny problems of equity and injustice. The Congress includes 19 Gateway Themes this year. I especially welcome papers to the Gateway Regional Economies and Competitiveness in which I am the gateway convener.
