Firstly my apologies if you get this more than once as I've posted on
various lists , and to individuals , and also if I've rambled on a bit.
I've been on various lists for a year or two and although I have always
found the REH information of great interest I've still probably never
appreciated REH's writings as much as many of you have
To me he was " a teller of tales " , not a truly significant writer .
I came to REH via the comics , a lighter version of Conan , I read my first
volumes , about 6 or 7 of the Sphere paperbacks when on holiday rushing ,
probably , to get on to the next . I read his other books in the same
way as they started appearing very regularly in the UK , as I also had to
get through the next Heinlein , Clarke , Asimov etc - " real authors ", as
I was really an SF fan
Then nothing appeared for years.
I found these lists but the only REH related book I re-read was The Last
Celt during this time , too busy re-reading Heinlein , until The Conan
Chronicles was released a few months back.
Mistake , I read it on holiday again , skimmed through , typos and all , to
get to my next book.
A few weeks later , I think it was on alt.fantasy.Conan , it was posted that
Steve Jones was interested in hearing what typos have been found.
I thought , get off your butt/arse/whatever , you spent 20 years in the
print business proof checking copy, use the small talent you have and help
out .
.
This I've done , and I've finished re-reading and sending the final
info. to Steve.
And the point?
Well , now having read and digested every word , phrase ,
comma [!] , etc in REH's writings , as never before, I can now truly
appreciate the power , depth and beauty of Howard's work .
Thank you Robert , or may I call you Bob , it's taken me nearly 30 years to
appreciate what a truly great writer you were.
And thanks to you all who have inspired me to find the real Robert E Howard
during this time.
