Totally OT, but maybe not completely.
Just finished watching "The Wind and the Lion" for the umpteenth time on
Turner South Cable. If ever a movie could be called Howardian in tone and
scope, I think this is one. Sean Connery's character is totally barbaric and
magnificent, think of Conan in "The Pool of the Black One" or "The People of
the Black Circle". Candice Bergen is a strong, tough woman character,
similar to Valeria or certainly Yasmina - come to think of it, the plots of
TPOTBC and TWATL have a lot of similarities - Bergen's character is kidnapped
by Connery's in an attempt by him to force a change in the political
situation, she and he both come to greatly admire and respect each other,
combine resources to fight mutual enemies, then part with feelings of
(unconsumated) admiration.
Plus, Brian Keith's portrayal of Theodore Roosevelt is spot on. Treat
yourself sometime and rent this one if you've never seen it.
Back to lurking mode for now,
Thanks,
Steve Harbin
